Orchid Island re-opened yesterday. The once overgrown, deserted island is now a hive of activity.

Yesterday at least 200 passengers from the cruise liner, Explorer Seas were at the island. Orchid Island is located outside Lami, along the Queens Highway.

Orchid Island owner, Waisea Bale is determined to support the Fijian economy by growing the business.

Mr Bale, who is also the owner of Bale Investment Fiji, took over the property two months ago with an investment of $1 million. This was funded by Bank South Pacific.

“Since the tourists are major part of our country, I’ll be more than happy to contribute to take it to another level.

“I tried to look into new businesses, so I decided to invest into this. Our opening was advertised by Moana Tours Fiji, who brought the tourists in,” he said.

Mr Bale said Orchid Island was revived to attract more tourists.

They have brought in various animal species including turtles, snakes, parrots and chickens.

The turtles, parrots and chickens were sourced from Taveuni Island. He plans to bring more species to the island.

“I have been working day and night to put this altogether for the cruise liners at our opening day.

The opening day included activities such as traditional meke, firewalking performances and  iTaukei-inspired lunch. This was inclusive in the Moana Tours Fiji package.

Moana Tours Fiji managing director Jokaveti Eya said: “I am so happy and blessed to be a part of Orchid Island so that guests can enjoy their tour.

“I am so lucky for this opportunity given by Mr Bale to come here and work together for the tour.”

She said Orchid Island is a great place to visit for both locals and tourists. They intend to work together to bring in more tourists to the island.

Orchid Island is located along the Queens Highway. Orchid Island will be open daily from 8am-4pm.

Future plans

There are plans to host a full day picnic activities for visitors, which will lead to Mosquito Island and other areas.

Mr Bale said a river safari and jet ski is also in the pipeline as they progress.

Other plans include: a coffee shop, restaurant with Fijian traditional food and a conference centre.
