Want your WAG at the World Cup? It'll cost you £10k, FA tells players

  • The Football Association has refused to pay for WAGs to travel to the World Cup
  • Instead, they will have to pay £10,000 each to join their partners in Russia
  • They are being offered a choice of two package deals, with five or ten-day trips

The antics of the wives and girlfriends of England’s footballers have received as much attention as the team’s performances at the past three World Cups.

This summer, however, may be different.

England manager Gareth Southgate has told the WAGs it will cost them £10,000 each to attend the finals in Russia because the FA has refused to foot the bill.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that they are being offered a choice of two package deals, involving five or ten-day trips.

The price includes accommodation in a hotel in St Petersburg, a 30-minute drive from where the players will be staying.

The women will not arrive in Russia until June 20 – two days after England’s first group match against Tunisia.

Despite the bill – and the rise in tension between the Russian and British governments, plus fears of attacks on England fans by Russian hooligans – a number of WAGs are still planning to travel to support their partners.

The glamour squad is expected to include Jamie Vardy’s wife Rebekah, Dele Alli’s girlfriend Ruby Mae, and Harry Kane’s fiancee Kate Goodland.
