Your Letters for Sept. 3

"As previous research has shown there is no effect on IQ from low exposure to fluoride, the city should be very cautious of using this single study in policy-making."

Nothing comes close to travelling Canada

After a short Stampede visit, my wife and I had a two-week holiday on a small Canadian-owned cruise ship off of Baffin Island and Green Island’s south and west coast. After this heavenly visit we spent a week in Stratford, Ontario watching six plays and four seminars. We have spent many long holidays in Europe and Asia, each enjoyable in its own ways, but none came close to the natural drama of northern Canada and literary enjoyment in Stratford. Our future holidays will now have a Canadian focus, for the good of our family and our country.

City needs more than one study for policy-making on fluoride

Re: Is a lower IQ for our kids worth harder teeth?, Aug. 27

Licia Corbella’s anti-fluoride column cited a study on fluoride use that upon further scrutiny raises some questions that should be addressed. First, why was the decreased IQ observed only in boys and not girls? Why was there an overall increase in verbal IQ but a decrease in performance IQ? How does the inclusion of two boys with very low IQs (in the 50s) affect the conclusions? Without those two boys, there was no observed effect. As previous research has shown there is no effect on IQ from low exposure to fluoride, the city should be very cautious of using this single study in policy-making.

Co-op striking a blow to its own future

Re: Co-op shifts to private wholesaler, Aug. 27

This strategy is short sighted because: any wholesaler can provide profit for a time; the loss of Calgary Co-op business has to result in the loss of local supporting wholesale infrastructure, weakening Calgary Co-op’s bargaining position with their new supplier; Save-On foods is a food retailer, Federated Co-operatives Limited has no interest in retailing; Calgary Co-op has a significant voice in the existing co-op system; and the board’s role is to ensure decisions position the Co-op to still be serving members 100 years from now.

As a concerned member I have requested the Board of Directors suspend this decision while they broaden their knowledge beyond their managements’ perspectives before cementing this arrangement. In my view Calgary Co-op is striking a very serious blow to its own future.

An appropriate slogan

The Liberal campaign slogan “choose forward” fits well with the Liberals. It’s a vacuous, empty, hollow meaningless cliche that implies no destination.

A Liberal win would drive Alberta out

I despise the Liberal government and everything they stand for. However, on the bright side, if they do win the next election it will hasten the exit of Alberta and Saskatchewan out of confederation. It will be the beginning of the end.
