Victoria council has passed a controversial cruise ship motion.

Victoria city council has passed a cruise ship motion that calls for more regulations.

The motion, proposed by Mayor Lisa Helps, Coun. Ben Isitt and Coun. Marianne Alto, passed at the Victoria city council meeting Thursday but will still need to be ratified during next week’s meeting scheduled for Oct. 24.

The motion calls for shore power to be installed at Ogden Point and asks that the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority not increase the number of cruise ships entering the city until environmental concerns are addressed.

During Thursday’s meeting, Isitt said he wanted to take the regulations further.

“The industry should be wound down until such time that it was a sustainable power source,” Isitt said.

Coun. Geoff Young said the motion is hurting the city.

“The industry should be wound down until such time as it has a sustainable power source,” Young said.
