A passenger ship Christened by an American TV talk show host has docked in Portland.

The Nieuw Statendam arrived at Portland Port this morning at 6.28am after travelling overnight from Falmouth.

The vessel is currently on a 15 day cruise from Fort Lauderdale in the US to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. 

Prior to arriving in UK waters it had been travelling for a week across the ATlantic Ocean from Freeport, Bermuda. 

Operated by Holland America cruise line, the vessel was built in 2018 and was Christened by American TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

It boasts 13 decks and is carrying more 2,600 passengers.

It will spend the day moored at Portland Port before setting sail at 8pm as it makes its way to Le Havre in France. The vessel is set to return to Portland in September for a second visit.

The next cruise ship due to arrive  at Portland Port is the Rotterdam, a similar sized vessel run by the same company and will dock on April 23.
