Home Free to perform in east Idaho Saturday

POCATELLO — The all-vocal country band Home Free is coming to Pocatello and they’re bringing along new music from their most recent album “Timeless.”
The concert will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Bannock County Event Center at the fairgrounds in Pocatello. Tickets are $35 for the floor and people who purchase these tickets may bring a chair to sit in during the concert. Grandstand general admission tickets are $15 for children and $25 for adults.
Local musician Brody Finch will open the show. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.
“Timeless” includes the band’s own arrangements of several well-known songs including Tom Cochrane’s “Life is a Highway” and “Man of Constant Sorrow” by The Soggy Bottom Boys from the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
But guys in Home Free also chose to expand their own songwriting skills for this album.
“This is the most originals we have ever done,” said tenor vocalist Rob Lundquist in a recent telephone interview with the Journal. “Tim is a pretty prolific songwriter and Austin is also.”
The roots of Home Free were planted in Minnesota in 2000 by brothers Adam and Chris Rupp. They drew inspiration from the a cappella group Rockapella, which was the house band for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) show called “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”
“They thought it would be cool to do contemporary a cappella,” Lundquist said. “It was a hobby for many years. It did not become professional until about eight years later.”
The two brothers and other original members gradually began singing professionally, including performances on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
Their big break came when they won season four of the NBC show “The Sing-Off” in 2013.
The win was followed by the “Crazy Life” album release and tour. They have since toured in Europe and Australia, released two Christmas albums and two additional studio albums. “Timeless,” the group’s most recent effort, was released recently.
The band lineup has changed several times over the years. Current members include Rob Lundquist, who joined in 2008; Tim Foust, who joined in 2012; Matthew “Austin” Brown officially joined in early 2013, but had been singing with the group for several months prior. Original member Chris Rupp left the group in 2016 and was replaced by Adam Chance. Founding member Adam Rupp is the most tenured.
All of the members of Home Free have received formal musical training. Lundquist has a bachelor’s degree in music, though he did not originally begin his love of music as a vocalist.
“I played the saxophone all through high school,” he said.
Prior to joining Home Free, Lundquist sang with fellow Minnesota-based group called Four Shadow.
Lundquist said that Home Free’s live show is all about the fans.
“We just try to get a good variety of stuff people want to hear,” he said. “Of course this tour will have a lot more of our stuff. We strive to accommodate everybody; we like to break down the fourth wall. Our fans are just amazing, they allow us to do what we do.”
