EAST BRUNSWICK - Motorists beware. The speed limit on three heavily traveled roadways are being lowered.

On Thursday, the speed limit on Church Lane will be lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph; on Fresh Ponds Road from 40 mph to 35 mph; and on Riva Avenue from 40 mph to 30 mph.

"Over the past year, I have received many calls and letters from residents regarding the safety of the roads on Church Lane, Fresh Ponds Road, and Riva Avenue," Mayor Brad Cohen said in a statement. "Most of the issues are in regards to the speed of vehicular traffic, accidents, and unsafe driving."

Cohen said in order to consider any change in speed limits, New Jersey State Law requires that the township's Engineering Department conduct a Comprehensive Engineering and Traffic Evaluation.

"Any proposed change must be consistent with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devises and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials," he said.

As part of the study, the department reviewed recent traffic counts, speed survey data, traffic accident data and the current roadway geometry. The studies resulted in the speed limit reductions.

In addition, due to the high number of accidents, the mayor said "the current flashing light at the intersection of Church Lane and Fresh Ponds Road needs to be upgraded to a fully actuated signal."

This is scheduled for 2019, he said.

"The safety of our residents and those who visit East Brunswick will remain my number one concern," Cohen said. "Please be aware that these new speed restrictions will be strictly enforced."

The mayor thanked who reached out to him on this issue.

"We are a great community because of your active participation in your government," he said.
