Summer is mostly behind us, but the tourist season is very much still active in Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver says this weekend will be one of the busiest of the year for cruise ship traffic downtown with six ships expected to dock at the Canada Place terminal Saturday and Sunday.

The port says more than 30,000 cruise ship passengers will be embarking and disembarking between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on both days.

On Saturday, the Golden Princess, Ruby Princess and Nieuw Amsterdam will be docked at Canada Place, bringing 16,000 passengers into the downtown core. Three more ships — Celebrity Eclipse, Westerdam and Noordam — will sail Sunday with 14,000 passengers either ending or starting their Alaskan cruises in Vancouver.

“As a result, higher than normal traffic volumes are anticipated in the downtown core, along with increased demand for taxis and public transportation,” the Port of Vancouver said in a press release.

In addition to extra on-site staff, the port says Vancouver Police Department Traffic Authority members will be managing traffic and pedestrian flows at nearby crosswalks.

Downtown Vancouver will be nearly as crowded next weekend with eight cruise ships and 22,500 passengers expected to connect at Canada Place.

The port says more than one million cruise passengers on 290 ship visits are expected in Vancouver during the 2019 cruise season, which is a 21 per cent increase over 2018.
